What is BSL?

British Sign Language (BSL) is the first or preferred language of around 250,000 Deaf people in the UK. It is a language of space and movement using the hands, body, face and head and is in its 5th year of being officially recognised. Many more people who are not Deaf also use BSL as part of everyday language – as well as interpreters and relatives of Deaf people, these include people who work with the Deaf Community (such as social services, police, public services, front-line theatre and bar staff). These can run into hundreds of thousands.

Deaf and Disability Equality

Under the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), it is compulsory for service and education providers to make reasonable adjustments in order to meet the access requirements of Deaf and disabled people. The Deaf and Disability Equality Scheme of 2006 makes this a legal duty.

Many members of staff and freelancers choose to learn BSL as a first step towards carrying out this duty, enabling them to broaden their customer base through effective communication with BSL users at beginner or induction level. BSLworks has the expertise and resources to offer you a cost-effective, tailored intensive short course or workshop – such as a two-day Introduction to BSL course – in-house or at a venue booked by us. Email office@bslworks.com for more details.

CACDP
Signature

The former Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (see website) is a nationally-recognised awarding body, who aims to improve communication with Deaf and hard-of-hearing people. They approve teaching centres such as BSLworks on the basis that they are qualified to teach BSL courses accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) and follow its code of practice.
